....:::::...... .::.....:..
Welcome
Within the pages of my journal you will find mostly rants and commentary on topics of concern to me. Currently, those would include the illegal occupation of Iraq, human rights, the threat of theocracy, and the U. S. Presidency of Barack Obama.

If these things interest you as well, read on. If you wish to engage in attack debate, simply move on. I won't respond to you. If you are interested in honest debate, and have an open mind, then I welcome you.

Oh, and one more thing. I believe Bush 43 was the worst president ever to hold that office in the history of the United States. I am unashamed of that opinion.

Truth
If your actions harm no one, then they are ethical. The reverse is not necessarily true.

Short update

location: Kindred Main
Current Mood: anxious anxious

We are still waiting confirmation, but it appears she may be fighting sepsis again. Fever over 104, heart rate high, sleeping pretty much all day. Pneumonia got her down here to the ICU, but it's the sepsis that will keep her.

Barbara update

She slept about 5 hours. Woke up fairly agitated, but is settling down now, and getting evening medications. Hopefully she can sleep through until morning.

ICU is open except for 6-8 (am and pm). Visitors may not have cots though. I've been cat-napping upright intermittently.

So much for that plan

location: Kindred Main
Current Mood: bitchy bitchy

I think next time I just won't tell anyone until after the surgery is over. It's been postponed again.

ETA: No new date yet. No explanation for why. Just an ephemeral "sometime next week" for the transfer over to the hospital where the surgery is to take place.

Monday 8-Feb - Surgery day for Barbara

location: Kindred Main
Current Mood: anxious anxious

Assuming we don't have something else interfere in the next 3 days (crossing everything, knocking on wood, etc.) the surgery will be Monday morning 8-Feb. This is it folks. If there is ever a time to turn it on, it's now. Thank you in advance!

A must read

The autism-vaccine lie that won't die - Salon.com - http://bit.ly/atlmR3

This week, Dr. Andrew Wakefield's now infamous study linking the MMR vaccine to autism was finally retracted by the prestigious Lancet medical journal. The move came days after medical officials in the United Kingdom found the doctor guilty of multiple ethics violations. For doctors, this is a victory -- but a bittersweet one. [...]
Somewhat unsurprisingly, this unethical man is now in Texas, and still peddling this long discredited nonsense. I wish I could be surprised by that.

Good news

Current Mood: cheerful cheerful

[livejournal.com profile] lasarina is returning to the LTAC tomorrow. That means she is stable enough that they can't keep her in this hospital. The surgeon has agreed to move forward. Her new surgery date is 8-Feb-2010.

Found out why I was wrong about the antibiotics

Current Mood: anxious anxious
Current Music: "The View" (not my choice)

[livejournal.com profile] lasarina was diagnosed with strep in her PICC line. So the plan to change the antibiotics changed with the new data. She's comfortable enough right now. The surgeon has been really put off by this, so energies toward that would be very welcome.

Progress

Current Mood: tired tired

[livejournal.com profile] lasarina is out of the IMU and into a regular room. She has been changed from IV antibiotics to oral ones. Still hoping to get the surgery done during this admission. Don't know when we will have another date.

ETA: I seem to have misunderstood the part about antibiotics. They just hung more IV ones. (27-Jan 10:15AM CT)

Air America ceasing operations, liquidating

Current Mood: discontent discontent

It is with the greatest regret, on behalf of our Board, that we must announce that Air America Media is ceasing its live programming operations as of this afternoon, and that the Company will file soon under Chapter 7 of the Bankruptcy Code to carry out an orderly winding-down of the business. SCOTUS Fail

Current Mood: aggravated aggravated

The right wing dominated SCOTUS today granted incredible new power to control our government to the corporations and unions. And to think, I thought both groups were already over-represented.

Untermensch - Suspected enemy combatants not legally persons

location: Kindred (Main)
Current Mood: distressed distressed

For those of you not on Twitter, this one is worthy of your notice, no matter your opinion of Twitter.

@wyldraven: Dred Scott Redux: Obama and the Supremes Stand Up for Slavery - http://bit.ly/8ZN5SD // I am deeply saddened and disturbed by this outcome.
Allow me to refer you to this post I made on Livejournal back on 12-Jan-2008. In that post, I promised to keep an eye out for the final outcome of the untermensch case, as I referred to it back then. William Fisher (via Chris Floyd above) accurately notes the similarity to Dred Scott. In either case, we have crossed a very disturbing threshold in our handling of the so-called "War on Terror". As you will note in the article linked above, this decision is
[...] introducing a shocking new precedent for all future courts to follow: anyone who is arbitrarily declared a "suspected enemy combatant" by the president or his designated minions is no longer a "person." They will simply cease to exist as a legal entity.
Now, by matter of comparison, I would note that every corporation in this country enjoys legal personhood.

And tomorrow, my friends, it could be you that is declared untermensch. Remember that as you decide whether to protest the next outrageous act of this "government" we claim as a democracy. That's the point, you know. You are supposed to fear the government. On that note, allow me to quote someone with whom you are probably familiar:
When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.
Thomas Jefferson
