WelcomeWithin the pages of my journal you will find mostly rants and commentary on topics of concern to me. Currently, those would include the illegal occupation of Iraq, human rights, the threat of theocracy, and the U. S. Presidency of Barack Obama.
If these things interest you as well, read on. If you wish to engage in attack debate, simply move on. I won't respond to you. If you are interested in honest debate, and have an open mind, then I welcome you.
Oh, and one more thing. I believe Bush 43 was the worst president ever to hold that office in the history of the United States. I am unashamed of that opinion.
TruthIf your actions harm no one, then they are ethical. The reverse is not necessarily true.

Once again, Keith says what is in my heart so much better than I can
Olbermann: Gay marriage is a question of love Finally tonight as promised, a Special Comment on the passage, last week, of Proposition Eight in California, which rescinded the right of same-sex couples to marry, and tilted the balance on this issue, from coast to coast. [...]
What is this, to you? Nobody is asking you to embrace their expression of love. But don't you, as human beings, have to embrace... that love? The world is barren enough.
It is stacked against love, and against hope, and against those very few and precious emotions that enable us to go forward. Your marriage only stands a 50-50 chance of lasting, no matter how much you feel and how hard you work.
And here are people overjoyed at the prospect of just that chance, and that work, just for the hope of having that feeling. With so much hate in the world, with so much meaningless division, and people pitted against people for no good reason, this is what your religion tells you to do? With your experience of life and this world and all its sadnesses, this is what your conscience tells you to do? [...] Go read the entire piece. It's well worth your time. Or better yet, when you get to the page, click the link to launch the video, and listen to Keith directly. You won't be sorry.

I'm impressed by the argument
Legal Groups File Lawsuit Challenging Proposition 8, Should It Pass The American Civil Liberties Union, Lambda Legal and the National Center for Lesbian Rights filed a writ petition before the California Supreme Court today urging the court to invalidate Proposition 8 if it passes. The petition charges that Proposition 8 is invalid because the initiative process was improperly used in an attempt to undo the constitution's core commitment to equality for everyone by eliminating a fundamental right from just one group – lesbian and gay Californians. Proposition 8 also improperly attempts to prevent the courts from exercising their essential constitutional role of protecting the equal protection rights of minorities. According to the California Constitution, such radical changes to the organizing principles of state government cannot be made by simple majority vote through the initiative process, but instead must, at a minimum, go through the state legislature first. I'm afraid to be hopeful, though. Still, it's an interesting and impressive argument. Click the link above to read the full press release, or see the writ petition here.

California Prop 8 and bigotry
The very turnout that helped Obama carry California also seems to have helped Prop 8 pass. Polls indicate that African Americans overwhelmingly supported Prop 8. It's one of life's true ironies that those who were victims of bigotry would support the same against a different class of people.
Barack Obama may have helped California Proposition 8 gay marriage ban pass Around 70 per cent of the African-American voters who overwhelmingly backed Mr Obama also approved Proposition 8, helping pass the controversial ballot measure despite a small majority of whites voting against the ban on same-sex unions. Hispanic and Asian voters were split on the issue. [...]

Bolthouse supports anti-gay marriage movement in California
Kick Bolthouse Farms Out Of Your Refrigerator As reported by Alex Blaze on the Bilerico Project, William Bolthouse, founder and 43% owner of Bolthouse Farms, a farm in California that provides organic juices, lemonades, and smoothies to places like Whole Foods and other organic market places, has just recently given a donation of $100,000 to proponents of a campaign to strip California couples of the right to marry. Wikipedia entry: According to the Bolthouse Foundation official website:No members of The Bolthouse Foundation have a financial interest in Bolthouse Farms, and The Bolthouse Foundation receives neither financial support nor benefits from the profits of Bolthouse Farms. Bolthouse Farms company profits are used to support the The Bolthouse Foundation.[4] However, Sarah Posner states that profits from the Bolthouse foundation are used to support the Evangelical Christian Alliance Defense Fund:Last year, ADF received over $21 million in individual and foundation funding. Some of the major donors include ... the Bolthouse Foundation, which is underwritten chiefly with profits from Bolthouse Farms, a family-run California company whose products are often seen at organic markets and Whole Foods. [5] Public relations obfuscation at work, apparently. Do something (send an email). Don't buy their products.

I'm impressed
Same-sex marriage ruling adds a volatile new issue to the presidential race "I respect the court's decision and as governor, I will uphold its ruling. Also, as I have said in the past, I will not support an amendment to the Constitution that would overturn this state Supreme Court ruling."
-- Arnold Schwarzenegger, California's Republican governor, responding to yesterday's ruling by his state's Supreme Court granting gay couples the right the marry. To be clear, I am impressed by Schwarzenegger's position. It's rare to see an open-minded Republican. I am not impressed with the attempt to modify California's constitution to overturn the ruling.
